The Genesis of a Purposeful Career
Reflecting on her career choice, Fushena shares, “I originally wanted to be a physical therapist but realized I wanted to work in health, not treating patients but developing programs. My undergraduate degree in community health shaped my approach to program development.” This pivot from physical therapy to public health highlights her adaptability and keen interest in broader health initiatives.
Integrating Experience into Education
As an adjunct faculty member at MUIH, Fushena leverages her extensive experiences across various sectors of public health. “I have worked at grassroots, federal contraction, residential treatments, and healthcare levels. In teaching, I integrate these experiences with practicality and innovation, relating them to the students’ coursework and proposals,” she explains. This approach enriches her students’ learning, blending theoretical knowledge with real-world applications.
Passion for Women’s Health
Fushena’s dedication to women’s health is deeply personal and professional. She states, “Women often make the majority of health-related decisions for their families. I focus on maternal stages, realizing that women are more likely to change health behaviors for better outcomes for their babies.” Her work in maternal health is also influenced by her cultural roots, “Coming from Trinidad and Tobago, I’m interested in sharing programs and resources to help third-world countries. My core values align with improving lives through social change.”
Proudest Achievements
Among her many achievements, Fushena recalls her time at Metro Teen AIDS with particular pride. “While at Metro Teen AIDS, I developed programs for diverse youth populations and managed the Young Women of Color Leadership Council. We advocated for reproductive health rights and HIV/AIDS prevention, leading to the recognition of March 10 as National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.” This accomplishment earned her the National Women’s Health Networks Barbara Seaman Award for Emerging Activist in Women’s Health in November 2011.
Teaching and Future Aspirations
Fushena’s love for teaching shines through her words, “I genuinely enjoy teaching; it keeps me current with the latest trends. I want to continue mentoring and working with women’s health groups.” As for her future, she is contemplative yet optimistic, expressing a desire to explore new paths in her impactful career.
Addressing Public Health Challenges
When asked about the pressing issues in public health, Fushena emphasizes the need to “increase safe and healthy pregnancies, improve birth outcomes, and reduce perinatal and environmentally related effects on women and children. “Her focus on these areas highlights her commitment to tackling the nuanced challenges in women’s health.
