Smith Center for Healing and the Arts and Maryland University of Integrative Health announce new oncology patient navigator program.
The Smith Center for Healing and the Arts and Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) are pleased to announce a new Integrative Oncology Patient Navigator Training Program. Through this online self-paced program, healthcare practitioners will explore the intersection of oncology care and integrative health practices and hone their skills in developing integrative navigation care plans for patients and clients.
“The demand for integrative care and for deeper support is high among both cancer patients and survivors, who often feel lost and overwhelmed navigating their cancer care,” said Lisa Simms Booth, Smith Center’s Executive Director. “Our groundbreaking Integrative Navigation Model expands the concept of patient navigation to offer comprehensive, holistic support throughout the entire cancer experience.”
The Integrative Oncology Patient Navigator Training Program provides learners with a strong foundation for creating patient-centered care for the whole person. The training teaches how to offer a deeper level of support that addresses the unique physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals challenged by cancer. Smith Center and MUIH believe that incorporating these elements can not only support a patient through cancer treatment but also increase overall well-being and quality of life for those facing cancer. This training will also provide the opportunity for learners from a variety of professions to earn up to 44 continuing education units including, Nurses, Social Workers, Health and Wellness Coaches and Nutrition Specialists.
We are grateful to our funding partners for helping to make this project possible: The Scheidel Foundation, the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, and the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation.
“The online self-paced format provides a convenient and flexible learning environment for busy healthcare professionals to expand their knowledge and skills and to enhance their career,” said Christina Sax, MUIH’s Provost and Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. This format builds on MUIH’s experience delivering fully online graduate programs and non-credit professional development courses since 2013. MUIH also offers graduate degrees in acupuncture, Ayurveda, cannabis science, health and wellness coaching, health promotion, herbal medicine, integrative health studies, nutrition, workplace wellness, and yoga therapy.
